Selling for $62,000 was a rare edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses, signed and inscribed by painter Marsden Hartley, who acquired the book during his time in Europe before creating his seminal “Amerika” series. Georgia OKeeffe was born on November 15, 1887, on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Two iconic Stieglitz editions sold here: the first, his 1933 Georgia O’Keeffe – Hand and Wheel, showing the artist’s hand laid atop the fender of her Ford V-8 convertible coupe, achieved $400,000, in the middle of its $300,000–$500,000 estimate the second, his famous 1923 Spiritual America, took in $218,750, more than twice its $90,000 high estimate. This may account for buyers’ going in big for photography at this particular auction. Photography, books, and manuscripts tend to sell for less than paintings and sculptures at auction, but they serve to enhance an artist’s aura and output. Among them was a manuscript for “My Eyes and Painting,” a set of O’Keeffe’s writings on her changing eyesight in the later stages of her career the artist’s address book, which she began to use in 1926 and a file of 300 handwritten recipe cards collected from the 1950s–70s. The Yale library acquisition includes a group of writings, scrapbooks, and ephemera documenting O’Keeffe and Stieglitz’s decades-long relationship. Also offered at Sotheby’s last week was the 1924 marriage certificate for O’Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz bearing artist John Marin’s signature, it sold for $15,000. A drama exploring Thee stormy relationship between two fiercely independent artists: Georgia OKeefe who needs the serene simplicity of New Mexico to paint and. A 2017 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York that focused on O’Keeffe’s sartorial interests and her role as photography muse may have sparked increased interest in the piece. 1 set the artist’s auction record at $44 million, nearly tripling its high estimate of $15 million and in 2018, a 1926 urban landscape featuring a street-level view of New York skyscrapers reached $13.3 million in Sotheby’s contemporary art evening sale.Īmong the personal effects from the artist’s holdings that were auctioned on Thursday was a black-and-white custom-made dress, which sold for $25,000, more than doubling its high estimate of $10,000. In May 2014, her 1932 painting Jimson weed/White flower no. More recently, her work has set records at auction. But lesser-known works also sold big: O’Keeffe’s sculpture Abstraction, first cast in 1946 and featuring a white spiral design, drew $668,000, double its $300,000 high estimate.Īt auction, O’Keeffe’s work has outperformed other American modernists in her circle, including Marsden Hartley and Arthur Dove, and peaked demand across several collecting categories, among them contemporary, American, Impressionist and modern sales in past seasons. The painting has been broadly exhibited at major institutions around the country, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum. Among the highest-selling lots was O’Keeffe’s Nature Forms – Gaspé (1931), which sold for $6.9 million, exceeding its high estimate of $6 million.

It’s so big that it was impossible to clip to my visor without covering part of the mirror. It’s the biggest visor-style Bluetooth car kit on the market. This isn’t ideal, as FM transmitters have very poor signal-to-noise ratio’s, but it works as well as any of the Bluetooth FM transmitters we reviewed. You can easily stream your favorite music through the device, but if you want to make use of your car speakers, you can use the FM transmitter. The quality is not far off from the best Bluetooth speakers on the market. The three speakers use 7-watts of power and are surprisingly loud. In each environment, the Freeway received the highest quality marks on both ends of the call. We tested the kit while in the park, driving through the city, and driving on the highway – each of these environments has a different level of ambient noise because of speed and road conditions. Not only is it important that you hear the caller’s voice clearly, but the caller also needs to be able to hear you. We took the Jabra Freeway on a drive to test the call quality on both ends of the conversation. This was evident in our call quality tests, as the Freeway was far ahead of the other Bluetooth car kits. Since you’re not using your car stereo for calls, it really cuts down on echoes and feedback, which are common when a microphone picks up your caller’s voice on the loudspeakers. It puts both the microphone and the speakers in the ideal position for phone calls. The Jabra Freeway is a visor-style Bluetooth car kit it clips to your sun visor. A hybrid model, the RX 450h, improves fuel economy and power but will be harder to find under $20k. Front-wheel drive was standard, but AWD models are easy to find under budget. In this price range, buyers should expect to find the RX 350 which is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 making 270 horsepower. Expect a plush ride focused on comfort, but due to its age tech features will be dated. The good news is that highly optioned models including AWD, with mileage under 100,000, can still be found under budget. That Toyota corporate reliability really helps the RX hold its value, meaning buyers will be looking at older model years, around 2014. A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard. All trims are powered by a 203-horsepower four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with standard front-wheel drive or available AWD. Despite those factors, you're still getting the best car in its class, as rated by multiple outlets when it was new. Buyers should expect to get 2019 with under 100,000 miles within this budget. That reputation leads to high resale value, and older, higher-mileage examples at this price threshold. Honda has a history of excellent reliability and that is reflected in the age and mileage of models available under $20,000. It did get high marks for fuel economy, excellent seats, comfortable passenger room, and the largest cargo space in the class. Even at the time, reviewers found the infotainment to be difficult to use. Due to its maturity, the CR-V lacks driver assistance features and tech found in newer competition on this list. For 2019 it was powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower or a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 190 horsepower and improved fuel economy. You can also change how thumbnails are displayed if you have downloaded any. Here you can set a default core to use for all the games in the playlists so you don't have to choose one manually for every new game you play. PlaylistsĪfter you've made some playlists you can come back here and go to "manage playlists". Move assets/xmb/custom to the Deck and change the assets directory in retroarch to it. I'm using retrosystem with some minor modifications (like removing the black icons.) If you go to the assets/xmb folder on a windows pc you can make your own custom assets from the existing assets by copy and pasting the ones you want and place them in retroarch/assets/xmb/custom. Select a different theme by pushing left or right on the dpad. In apperance you can also change the "menu icon theme". 90 makes the menu less transparent and more vissible, but you still see that you have a game on in the background. This is how much transparacy the menu has when you have a game running in the background. Go to apperance and change the "menu alpha factor" to 90. Here you can turn off menus you don't need. On-Screen displayĪnd at the bottom turn on menu-only notifications. This is good if you want to access the menu in desktop mode. Go to hotkeys and set "menu (toggle)" to right stick click button. I have the back buttons set to the following: You can view the buttons functions and set them to what you want. Instead of changing things here I'd suggest to change the controls for the application in steam instead. Some people might want to change it to something else to make it look stretched like on a CRT. Set aspect ratio to 1:1 PAR (something DAR). Online updaterĭownload/update cores and other stuff like thumbnails/databases. To see cores (emulators) you have downloaded and to download new cores. Next I'm going through the other options I think are important. Go to "settings/input/menu controls" and enable "menu swap ok and cancel buttons" to on. Some text might be cut off to the right, but works well for most things. Go to "settings/user interface/apperance" and change the menu scale factor to get a bigger interface. Go to "settings/user inetface" and set "menu screensaver timeout" to off. By quitting to steam things will revert to how they were before. This is good if you mess something up or get a black screen. This makes you have to save manually through main menu/configuration file. Go to settings/configuration and set "save configuration on quit" to off. Go to settings/user interface and set menu to xmb. There's some things I always change first before other settings to make the menu navigation better. I'm going to write this guide with the ui set to xmb gui (since that is what I'm using.) Some settings might only apply with xmb enabled. Go to the application menu/games right click on it and add it to steam. Setting up retroarch:ĭownload it from discover in desktop mode. I started to write about each emulator but figured I could write a general guide too. I've been playing around with retroarch a lot, trying to get the best results with different emulators.
Root Pruning: Prune roots 1/2″ to 1″ with sharp pruning shears. Let the tap water sit out on the counter over night to allow the chlorine to dissipate. Why no tap water? Tap water has chlorine which is not good tor the plant. Do not use tap water direct from the tap. Do not soak longer than overnight since plant roots need oxygen too. Plants should be transplanted within 24 to 48 hours of receiving them. If possible, continue to soak roots while transplanting. Roots should be soaked before planting a minimum of 4 to 6 hours to ensure proper hydration. Pay close attention to keeping stock cool, roots moist and protected from direct sunlight, until planted, to ensure best results.īefore Planting: Keep roots moist, cool and in the dark. Planting in containers allows control over sun exposure and temperature, allowing you to freely move the plants to more sheltered locations. When You Receive Your Shipment: Bare root plant material needs to be handled efficiently in order to promote the best health and survival rate. Be sure to select a container that is deep enough for the roots (12-15 inches or 30.5-38 cm.), water regularly, and feed each week with high potassium, low nitrogen fertilizer once they begin to flower. Lastly, when attempting to grow strawberries where temperatures climb, you can try growing the berries in a container. Final Note on Strawberry Growing in Hot Weather Maintain a watering schedule and allow drying between watering. Simply replace the plastic sheeting with 65 percent shade cloth, cover with straw or even build a fence or plant other plants nearby that will shade the berries. In the summer when temps soar, it is a good idea to shade the strawberry patch to prevent drying out or burning of foliage. If the berries are a bit white at the end, pick them anyway since they will continue to ripen for a few days once picked. Pick your strawberry bounty when the berries are uniformly red but not soft. Ventilate the covering on warm days by opening the ends and placing a tarp or blanket over it on freezing nights to retain heat.ĭuring the harvesting months of mid-winter to late spring, spread straw around the plants to keep the forming berries clean, allow air circulation and retain water. The berry plants can withstand a couple of nights of frost but no more. Once the weather cools, cover the bed with portable plastic sheeting about 4-6 mm thick, either set over a frame of half hoops or wire mesh. If not, use a commercial fertilizer that is rich in potassium and follow the directions to avoid overfeeding. If you set the plants in lots of compost, there is little likelihood they will need additional fertilizer. Twelve inches (30 cm.) of water saturation is sufficient, but then allow the soil to dry for a few days. Keep the soil uniformly moist if the leaves turn pale green, you are likely overwatering. Caring for Strawberries in Hot ConditionsĬare of the plants is of vital importance when strawberry growing in hot weather. Set strawberry plants 12 inches (30 cm.) apart to allow the runner to fill in space. Water in well and adjust the plants if they settle too much. Set the plants in compost-rich, well-draining soil, taking care not to set the crown of the start too high or it may dry out. Therefore, you may need to prevail upon friends or neighbors who have established plants to garner starts. Strawberries may be hard to come by in late summer, as nurseries do not usually carry them at that time. or 16-27 C.), so spring planting of strawberries in hot summer climates is doomed to fail. Strawberries flower and fruit in cool to warm temps (60-80 F. In the northern hemisphere, that would mean planting starts in September for harvest in January. So, the question stands, “How to grow strawberries in high heat?” When combining strawberries and hot summer climates, set the new plants late in the summer to allow time to establish during the cooler months so the berries are ripe in midwinter. Keep in mind that strawberries take four to five months of growth before they are ripe for harvest and well-established plants are the most prolific producers. The trick to growing strawberries in hot climates is to have the berries ready for picking in mid-winter, not late spring or early summer as is common in temperate zones. (29 C.) is possible with a bit of preparation and planting at the correct time of year. Strawberry growing in hot weather, where the daytime temperatures are more often than not over 85 F. Easy to grow in moderately temperate climates, there are those of us in hot areas of the country, including desert climates, that yearn for fresh strawberries plucked dewy and sweet from our own backyard. Restart the restore process and there’s free space available for the operating system partition to grow in to, and plenty of room to create new recovery and data partitions. It was a moment’s work to delete the existing recovery and data partitions, then ctrl-alt-F1 to the GUI. There are no tools in the Acronis GUI for deleting partitions and starting again, so I was stuck.Ĭommand line to the rescue! Ctrl-alt-F2 again, and there’s a perfectly good copy of fdisk available. I don’t know what it’s for but I didn’t feel like taking the risk of destroying it. I thought that shrinking the data partition would create free space that the operating system partition could grow in to, but I was caught out by the presence of a 500MB ‘recovery’ partition which Windows had sneaked in between the two. The GUI only allows you to shrink partitions or to grow them in to free space. Acronis recovery found and let me log on to the Samba share, and could thus see the drive and backups.Ĭhanging the partition sizes was the next problem. The solution was to mount the USB drive on my Linux PC, then share it using Samba. Though Acronis Linux is perfectly capable of mounting ext4 filesystems, the recovery GUI only acknowledges the presence of FAT and NTFS discs. My USB drive happened to be formatted ext4. Acronis recovery will read USB drives, so the next step should be easy, right? No. It took a while for the several hundred gigabytes, but it got there. My next trick was to copy the backup from the Time Capsule to a USB hard drive using another Linux PC. Using that, I could connect to the Time Capsule absolutely fine and mount it to the local filesystem. Yay! Power! A bit of digging reveals a command called asamba which can connect to SMB shares. In Acronis Linux, pressing ctrl-alt-F2 in time-honoured fashion brings up a command line. I couldn’t even persuade it to ask for the username and password, though it could see the Time Capsule on the network. Would the Acronis recovery system connect to the Time Capsule? Would it ever. My backups are on a network drive, which happens to be an Apple Time Capsule. This contains a small Linux distribution ( Acronis Linux) and a GUI for managing the recovery operation. Acronis True Image will create a ‘recovery’ USB stick from which the PC boots. Time to make sure the backup is up-to-date and then to restore to differently-sized partitions. The operating system partition was full, and things were starting to fail. Inevitably, it turned out that the boundary between these partitions was in the wrong place. There’s one for the operating system (Windows 10) and applications, and another with data on it, analogous to the /home partition on a Linux system. The PC is set up with two main partitions on the disk. This week I had reason to use it in earnest. Other backup packages are available, as they say, but it’s worked well enough for me. Years ago, I started using Acronis True Image to back up my office PC. A little embedded Linux magic comes in unexpectedly handy. |
